Is there caffeine in chocolate?

Chocolate does contain caffeine, but a very small amount. Here are is a list of various amounts and types of chocolate and their corresponding amounts of caffeine.

Dark chocolate

  • A few small squares (15g) = 6-12 mg of caffeine. Equivalent to a small cup (8oz) of decaf coffee.

  • A full bar (55g) = 24-48 mg, which is equivalent to a small (8oz) cup of green (28 mg) or black (47 mg) tea.

Milk chocolate

  • A few small squares (15g) = 1.5-3 mg of caffeine. Equivalent to a small cup (8oz) of decaf black tea.

  • A full bar (55g) = 6-12 mg, which is equivalent to a small (8oz) cup of decaf coffee.

White chocolate

  • No caffeine. The caffeine is contained in the cocoa solids (brown portion) of the cocoa bean, not in the fat. White chocolate is made only from the fat of the cocoa bean, not the whole cocoa bean.
