+ Chocolate Makers:

Bean to bar chocolate makers must have control over the whole process of chocolate making. This includes starting with sourcing raw cacao beans, roasting, refining it, and everything in between. If the chocolate maker also grows or ferments their own cacao, even better. Add that in the description!

I understand there are bean to bar makers who outsource the roasting and/or refining to a third party. That is considered private label brand chocolate, but the brand itself is not the chocolate maker. If your private label chocolate is made with fine chocolate from a reputable maker, then it may be classified as related bean to bar business (see below).

Chocolate makers in the map are currently categorized under two categories:

1) 100% bean to bar

2) Bean to bar & couverture

The second category is for makers who produce their own line of bean to bar chocolate, but also work as chocolatiers. This distinction allows the map user to be aware that not all the chocolate is your own bean to bar chocolate, and helps them to clarify if that is what they are looking for!

The purpose of this is to really set a clear line between chocolate makers and chocolatiers. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. Or check out the FAQ page to learn more.

+ Cacao Suppliers:

This category includes cacao growers who sell their cacao, as well as cacao distributors who sell ethically sourced fine cacao. Some may sell only wholesale, while others may sell smaller quantities to the public.

+ Retailers & Subscriptions:

This category includes retailers who only or predominately sell chocolate made from bean to bar makers, as well as bean to bar chocolate subscription boxes.

+ Equipment:

This category includes bean to bar equipment manufacturers who produce refiners, winnowers, and other equipment you need to make your own chocolate, as well as distributors that have a fair range of equipment that bean to bar chocolate makers can find helpful.

This can be large wholesale equipment, or equipment for the bean to bar hobby maker!

This is a mishmash of very interesting and relevant bean to bar related companies including food or non-food related. This can include cacao related ornaments, cacao tea, juice, and so on.

Private label brand chocolate (fine quality chocolate made by a third party manufacturer) would fall under this category as well.

+ Events:

Bean to bar chocolate events which are open to the public and/or to people in the industry. This can include large bean to bar conventions, or small local meetups that get together regularly to eat/discuss bean to bar chocolate.

+ Researchers:

These are researchers and scientists who have dedicated their career to the many branches of the chocolate & bean to bar industry. For the time being, researchers must have peer-reviewed research published in research journals and be related to chocolate and cacao. Check out their work.
