Bean To bar map legend

The category Icon

IMG-3978.jpg

The category icon is located in the top left of the main maps on both the desktop and mobile versions. This will drop down all the categories of businesses listed below. You may turn them on or off so that the map reflects only what you would like to see.

If you are a bean to bar consumer, you may not want to see cacao grower & distributors or equipment manufacturers. Or you may use it to clean up the map if you are looking for something more specific, such as events closest to you.

Your Location

The little blue circle represents your current physical location. The app will always open zoomed in to where you are physically located.

The Bean To Bar Map Pins

Bean To Bar Makers

This pink pin indicates a bean to bar maker, which is defined as a chocolate maker who has complete control over the entire chocolate making processes. That is, starting by sourcing raw cacao, roasting, winnowing, refining, and tempering it themselves.

Businesses listed may produce bean to bar chocolate only, or be a combination of a bean to bar maker as well as a chocolatier (where they sell bean to bar chocolate and chocolates made from couverture).

Bean To Bar Retailers & Subscriptions

The yellow pins represent retailers both online and brick and mortar (with a shop open to the public) who only sell, or mostly sell, bean to bar chocolate products from other bean to bar makers.

This also includes bean to bar subscription box services (where you receive a new box of bean to bar chocolate every month or so).

Cacao growers & Distributors

This green pin indicates a cacao grower and/or cacao distributor. Some grow and sell their own cacao, while others sell cacao wholesale to makers or the public.

Check these out if you are a bean to bar maker or a bean to bar hobbyist looking to source raw cacao beans.

Some may also sell other products that can be incorporated into your chocolate such as cacao butter, vanilla, etc.

The Information Box

The information box appears when you click on a coloured pin on the map. Below is an explanation of what each information box is about.

Business Name & Address

IMG-3989.jpg

The first thing you will see is the name of the business in white, followed by the address in blue below the business name.

If the address section only contains a city or country, this means the business does not have a permanent physical location the public can visit.

However, the business still may have local markets or tours, so check their website to find out more.

Always check the business website for actual address and hours of operation. Never visit according to the pin on the app. The location shown offers you an idea of their location (sometimes exact, sometimes not).

Business Category and Subcategory

IMG-3989.jpg

The first box in the top left indicates the business category (example: maker, grower, etc.).

The box underneath this is the subcategory. For instance if this business is categorized as “other” the box underneath specifies more clearly what type of business they are.

Storefront or Online Store?

IMG-3989.jpg

The two boxes on the right describe to you if the business has a physical storefront you may visit, and if the business has an online shop where you can purchase goods.

This helps you quickly determine if they offer the service you are looking for.

Just be sure to check their website first for exact address and hours of operation in case they have changed recently.

Website & Promo Code

IMG-3989.jpg

The orange “website” button will take you to their main website page. If the company doesn’t have a website, it will take you to their social media page (Facebook or Instagram).

IMG-3991.jpg

If applicable, a blue button may appear which will contain a discount code for you to apply the company’s online shop.

These discount codes are ONLY available on the app, not the desktop version.

If you click on the blue box, a window will appear to indicating what the promo code applies to.

Check back often to see if there are any new discount codes for your favorite businesses!
